Where to LIve in North West London #5: South Hampstead

How to get there? Finchley Road tube station has both the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines. From there, it’s a 6-7mn ride to Wembley Park tube station (and then 5mn walk to LIL Winston Churchill), 7-10mn to Baker Street, 25mn to Liverpool Street, 30mn to Canary Wharf.
South Hampstead station has Overground and Thameslink trains, with three different lines. There are direct trains to St Pancras and Euston train stations, to Luton and Gatwick airports and to the South West (Richmond, Kew Gardens, Brighton).
To reach other French schools than LIL, it’s a 25mn tube journey to South Kensington tube station (Jubilee/ Piccadilly); and a 10mn Thameslink ride to Kentish Town.

What does it look like? Hamptead encompasses several areas located North of Hampstead Heath – West Hampstead, South Hampstead, Belsize Park, Hampstead Village. It is a residential area with large, charming houses split into flats; larger blocks; and a few streets with smaller terraced house. Most of these houses have been refurbished while retaining some period features – including windows, so don’t look for double-glazing…

Who lives there? South Hampstead has a nice cultural mix, with people of all ages, families, young professional and older residents. It is a quiet area but with a strong sense of neighbourhood, with people actually talking to each other. The area feels safe.

Where to shop? The area is within walking distance to a wide range of shops located on Finchley Road, West End Lane and Kilburn High Road. There are two large supermarkets on Finchley Road (Sainsbury’s and Waitrose) with free car park, as well as various useful services (post office, dry cleaning, optician, dentists, doctors, DIY…). There is also a farmers’ market every Saturday, in front of West Hamptead Thameslink. Hampstead High Street is not far, with higher end shops and restaurants.

What to do ? Within walking distance, there are two cinemas and a wide range of restaurants, catering for all tastes and all budgets. There is a sports centre in Swiss Cottage, with a gum and a swimming pool. There are also various private and public tennis courts. Hampstead Heath is the main park, and offers the opportunity for walking, running and even swimming in the lakes!
